The Elang Jawa is the Indonesian name of the bird that is also known as the Javan Hawk-eagle. It has been designated as the national bird of Indonesia, but has become very rare. The bird is officially classified as being an endangered species. The main threats to its existence are loss of habitat and poaching. Some people capture the birds in order to illegally sell them as pets. It is believed that fewer than one thousand Elang Jawa birds still exist. In the wild, they live only on the island.
